Mass balance models of Ekman transport and nutrient fluxes in coastal upwelling zones

چکیده
The nutrient cycles of coastal upwelling zones are studied with simple mass balance models of Ekman transport, longshore transport, surface productivity, and dissolved phosphorous. The models are constrained with data from the Peru, northwest Africa, and Oregon upwelling systems. The onshore-offshore mass balance model agrees with published Ekman transport, surface productivity, and nutrient data as well as hypothesized nutrient f-ratios for highly productive coastal settings. The onshore-offshore model suggests that increased primary productivity in glacial-era coastal upwelling zones was not a linear function of Ekman transport, but instead was probably dependent on the physical and chemical dynamics of a specific setting. In the Peru upwelling system, longshore quatorward surface currents and poleward undercurrents produce positive surface nutrient gradients in the equatorward direction and relatively constant gradients in subsurface waters. Longshore nutrient gradients off northwest Africa are positive in the equatorward irection for both surface and subsurface waters. These observations are consistent with the conceptual model of surface and subsurface currents which are moving toward the equator and continually being upgraded by the offshore flux of nutrients. The northwest Africa and Peru data are not consistent with the longshore nutrient model of Redfield et al. (1963).

Article history: Received 28 July 2015 Received in revised form 19 January 2016 Accepted 20 January 2016 Available online 26 January 2016 Monterey Bay, California (CA) receives nutrients from multiple sources, including river discharge, upwelling of deep water, and submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). Here we evaluate the relative importance of these sources to Northern Monterey Bay with a mi...
متن کاملUpwelling source depth in the presence of nearshore wind stress curl
[1] The influence of nearshore wind stress curl on the relative partitioning of bottom boundary layer (BBL) and interior transport within an idealized, two-dimensional coastal upwelling system is studied theoretically and using a numerical model. A nearshore reduction in upwelling favorable wind stress amplitude (1) reduces the width of the inner shelf, (2) reduces the local wind-driven Ekman t...
متن کاملHow will Somali coastal upwelling evolve under future warming scenarios?
Somali upwelling system, the fifth in the world, presents some unique features compared with the other major upwelling systems: 1) it is a Western Boundary Upwelling System located near the Equator and 2) upwelling affects the moisture responsible for monsoon rainfall. The intensity of Somali coastal upwelling during summer was projected for the twenty first century by means of an ensemble of G...
متن کاملThe future of coastal upwelling in the Humboldt current from model projections
The Humboldt coastal upwelling system in the eastern South Pacific ocean is one of the most productive marine ecosystems in the world. A weakening of the upwelling activity could lead to severe ecological impacts. As coastal upwelling in eastern boundary systems is mainly driven by wind stress, most studies so far have analysed wind patterns change through the 20th and 21st Centuries in order t...
متن کاملImpact of atmospheric coastal jet off central Chile on sea surface temperature from satellite observations (2000-2007)
[1] The coast of central Chile is characterized by intermittent low-level along-shore southerly wind periods, called coastal jets (CJs). In this study, we take advantage of long-term satellite data to document the CJs characteristics over 2000–2007 and investigate its impact on upwelling. The CJ structure has a core some 100 km from the shore and a cross-shore scale of 160 km, and it usually la...
